Stairway to Heaven on a White Mount
Welcome to Pamukkale, a Unesco-assigned World Heritage of Turkey -deserving the title so, by having its unique and all-natural formations. Very hot thermal water springs around gave the shape and colors of Pamukkale Mountain: Millennials ago, they flood over the slopes, channeled the rocks through and carried their high calcium content which would gave Pamukkale’s white color later wherever they went.
According to the flood’s direction, natural formations called travertines looking like grand steps or terraces on the mountain were shaped. After taking photos of them or benefitting from the healthy waters and muds in their puddles, follow the direction upwards and go to a historical heaven!
Cleopatra’s Mysterious Swimming Spot
At the top of the mountain, you’ll see a very large pool filled with light blue hot waters. And some antique remains lie beneath the surface as well… It’s believed that once Queen Cleopatra swam here to get healthier, prettier and younger. Today, visitors have an exclusive swimming session in there to have the same advantages with her while enjoying Cleopatra Pools’ unique atmosphere.
Hierapolis: City of Roman Baths and Pilgrimage
After the swimming session, you can start your journey in the antique grand streets of the Ancient City of Hierapolis. Once known as the city of Roman Baths, Hierapolis is mainly famous for its ancient theatre, which you’ll see at the first sight. Then you can follow the path that leads you the remains of the city including glamorous gates, sculptures, baths, inns, churches etc. And don’t forget to visit Hierapolis Museum of which building itself is converted from an ancient Roman Bath, exhibits interesting items.
Even if how deep the roots of Hierapolis’ diversified past could reach is still unknown, we know this city is significant both for its Hellenistic impact and Christianity: It was a place once that nestled important figures and witnessed striking events in early-Christianity era such as the murder of St. Phillippus, Christ’s one of 12 apostles. Today, his tomb is here and some Christian people visit there for pilgrimage. So, in every way, a visit to Hierapolis while you are in Pamukkale is a must.
A Peaceful Walk along “Marsian” Waters
When we finish our time in Pamukkale, we’ll head to Salda Lake. Besides from its lovely scenery that combines shining blue waters with pure white shores, and being the cleanest lake in the world, it has also quite interesting features.
Turkish Maldives, as residents call it, Salda Lake is a unique natural source with:
- Minerals that were found only on Mars
- Ions of gold and silver
And when all of these through its waters are applied on one’s body, getting healthier is inevitable. Also, sand covering the shore is a mixture of medicinal soil and mineral deposits. So, we highly recommend you to have a walk in the lake either on the sands. Yet, watch out for the depth: The lake’s depth can reach to 186 meters!
In a nutshell, we’ll visit incredible places that will whet your travelling appetite. So, if you are interested in, you can join us by booking Pamukkale and Salda Lake Tour from Alanya online or you can contact us for further information!
